AMA with Brianne Nord-Stewart, I've made some shows and won some awards and stuff!

Hey all!

This is my first ever AMA.

What do I know about that you might want to ask me about?
I’ve made a bunch of music videos in crazy spaces from mansions to warehouses to glaciers (yes, literally inside a glacier). I’ve traveled the world touring my shorts to Academy accredited film festivals and markets, and I’ve now made two webseries that got funding!

I live in Canada so I’m well-versed in the Canadian funding space, but have schmoozed with all kinds of folks and know more than what my tiny giant country supports.

You can read a more comprehensive but slightly out of date bio at and follow me on the social at @bnordstewart should you so desire.

I’m also an avid cyclist and snowboarder, I’ve hitch-hiked across many countries, couchsurfed my way through the Cannes Film Festival, and can tell you had to make a killer business card to hand out while you schmooze your face off. Oh and I’ve also gotten hit by cars more times than I would like …so.

Ask me anything?

We've got an AMA for that!

Welcome, Brianne! First question… when did you get into filmmaking, and into web series in particular?

I had some filmmaking questions but now I have to know more about this

Great question! I made my first (real) film (aka there was a script and actors and editing) in grade 11 and then decided to go to film school. I wrote THE DANGERS OF ONLINE DATING (DOOD) in 2012, made the first 4 episode season and then later did YOUNG & RECKLESS (Y&R) in 2016 and then made season 2 of DOOD in 2017 and launched both seasons.

What do you usually put on a business card to make it “killer”?

What has been your biggest challenge in creating high quality web series, and how do you keep pushing when you hit a wall?

(Bri Castellini) #9

So what appealed to you about the web series format, since you’d made a (real) film already? And what was different about making a series versus a single film?

Well!! I live in British Columbia, Canada and one of the cable providers here gives away a BUNCH of money through their program called Storyhive. So if you’re a writer find a Canadian filmmaker who live in BC or Alberta and apply for it!

Other Canadian funds are IPF, Bell Fund, Telus Fund, CMF, and Telefilm

Do you feel like film school was worth it?

(Jaime Lancaster) #12

Hm I’m in the US sadly… what do you think it was about your applications (other than being good ideas) put you ahead? That’s something that can translate across borders I’m sure

Yeah my lawyer may not want me to talk about it…but I’ve been in a car, on a bike, and once while walking…

It’s very important that one side of you card is matte and white-ish so that you or oltheperson you give it to can write on it. Black glossy cards are the devil.

:flushed::flushed::flushed::flushed::flushed::flushed: ok moving on hahah… what kind of stuff do you do on films, primarily? Writer, director, DP, combo of some sort?

My biggest challenge is marketing and discoverability on the web. Once I’ve put ally blood sweat and tears into it I want people to see it!! I’ve recently partnered with a digital media specialist, and am working on a new game plan for our s03 funding applications for DOOD. Basically I need to put more $$$$ behind the marketing I think.

So if you don’t have $$$$ or even $ for marketing… what do you recommend? What has worked or not for you?

It really started with the concept of DOOD being perfect for episodic. So it was about the content. With Y&R we wanted to do a pilot presentation and show off our skills and we’re lucky it also worked really well that way!

Yes and no. I’m glad I went. But I was creating opportunities for myself before my first day of class. (I got an internship with the speakers from the welcome to universal day)

Film school or none, you HAVE TO do the work and work your fucking ass off and make connections.
