Distribution Contracts

(Don't Suck) #1

We’ve received a few and might sign one. Who do you go to to review these for you? Any recommendations? Everything I’ve found is so expensive.

@Craia9 @HackettKate @Alex_LeMay any advice?

If this is Tyler, we met at NJ WebFest last year :slight_smile:

If the contract is with a smaller company, you might not need a professional to review it - maybe you can ask a legal student for a favour, or even a friend who’s signed a few before.

The main things I look for are clauses with fully spelled-out details on:

  • Exclusivity
  • Ownership of the episodes
  • Payments, and the criteria they’re based on (viewership numbers or whatnot)
  • Length of the agreement and the right to terminate early

If you think anything isn’t clear, don’t be afraid to ask for modifications for clarity.

Thank you @hermdelica. :slight_smile: It seems clearer than other contracts we’ve received in the past actually! just wouldn’t feel comfortable signing without somebody else’s eyes on it first.

If you were a SAG production, make sure you aren’t going to need to jump contracts. You do NOT want to be on the hook for residuals.
